Competitiveness

Your child will face competition throughout their life. Some competitiveness is good, but some children can feel a lot of pressure to win and that can affect their wellbeing. There are some things you can try to teach your child that winning isn’t everything - sometimes it is about the taking part!

Ways to help your child with competitiveness:

  1. Talk to them about the positives other than winning. Friendships, fun and being part of a team are all positives they can take away from an activity.
  2. Reward and praise them. When they don’t win, they can feel disheartened, but remind them they did their best and worked really hard.
  3. Show unconditional love. Demonstrate to them that whether they win or lose, you will still support them. This helps them understand that winning isn’t everything.
