Children with special educational needs

A child or young person has special educational needs and disabilities if they have a learning difficulty and/or a disability that means they need special health and education support. We shorten this to SEND.

If your child is before school age and you are worried that your child might have any special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND), there are people who can help.

Wirral’s Early Years Area SENCO Team  can offer advice and support for children at home and in settings. There are also funding streams available to support your child within an Early Years setting.

SENDLO  brings together information about the local services and support available across education, health and social care for families with children and young people aged 0 to 25, who have special educational needs and/ or disabilities.

Wirral’s Children with Disabilities Service  is focused on supporting children with disabilities to access support and services that will promote their quality of life and achieve positive results. The service supports children and young people with the following conditions:

  • A severe or profound learning disability
  • A severe physical disability
  • A substantial degree of visual impairment/moderate and severe hearing loss
  • A complex Autistic Spectrum Condition with severe learning difficulty
  • A complex medical health condition
