February ~ Self-help skills

Self-care tasks can include getting dressed,  mealtimes and toileting. The small, playful moments at home make a difference, and build skills that last a lifetime

Top tips

Choices make your child feel that they are making independent decisions. For example:
Do you want the red one or the blue one?
Do you want the pants first or the socks?
Do you want to go first or should I go first?
Do you want to pick up two toys or four toys?

Give praise that builds confidence, not just focused on results.
Effort:  “I love how hard you tried”
Independence: “You started that by yourself—amazing!”
Specific achievements: “You remembered to wash your hands after the toilet. Brilliant!”
