We want to make sure the hedgehog, the UK’s only spiny mammal, remains a common and familiar part of British life.
We know hedgehogs are in trouble. We’ve lost a third of all our hedgehogs since the millennium.
Hedgehogs love gardens, and fortunately, there are around half a million hectares of gardens in the UK. We hope to encourage Hedgehog support and promote their protection through projects like The BIG Hedgehog Map or our Hedgehog Champions.
The BIG Hedgehog Map is a new feature launched through the Hedgehog Street campaign, a national conservation project by PTES & BHPS aimed at Britain’s declining hedgehogs.
Hedgehog Champions is where you come in.
More than 100,000 Hedgehog Champions are registered on this website, forming a vibrant and enthusiastic community. Champions help us make a real difference for hedgehogs all over the country.
Hedgehog Street is part of a wider campaign to help hedgehogs, run by two UK-based charities, People’s Trust for Endangered Species (PTES) and the British Hedgehog Preservation Society (BHPS).
Whilst we have been working together for over a decade, recent efforts have been focused on the conservation of the hedgehog, as the evidence for a decline has mounted. We run a steering group that meets every six months to decide on the direction of the work.
The arms of our strategy for hedgehogs:
- Fund research on hedgehogs - We have invested in a range of research projects that are looking at answering some of the unknown questions concerning hedgehogs and their ecology. Some of this research has helped us to develop completely new ways to detect hedgehogs
