We want to make sure the hedgehog, the UK’s only spiny mammal, remains a common and familiar part of British life.
We know hedgehogs are in trouble. We’ve lost a third of all our hedgehogs since the millennium.
Hedgehogs love gardens, and fortunately, there are around half a million hectares of gardens in the UK. We hope to encourage Hedgehog support and promote their protection through projects like The BIG Hedgehog Map or our Hedgehog Champions.
The BIG Hedgehog Map is a new feature launched through the Hedgehog Street campaign, a national conservation project by PTES & BHPS aimed at Britain’s declining hedgehogs.
Hedgehog Champions is where you come in.
More than 100,000 Hedgehog Champions are registered on this website, forming a vibrant and enthusiastic community. Champions help us make a real difference for hedgehogs all over the country.
Hedgehog Street is part of a wider campaign to help hedgehogs, run by two UK-based charities, People’s Trust for Endangered Species (PTES) and the British Hedgehog Preservation Society (BHPS).
Whilst we have been working together for over a decade, recent efforts have been focused on the conservation of the hedgehog, as the evidence for a decline has mounted. We run a steering group that meets every six months to decide on the direction of the work.
The arms of our strategy for hedgehogs:
Commercial work for hedgehogs - We have set up and manage a series of professional training courses for land managers and consultants, delivered by mammal experts in different parts of the UK Visit the Training for Land Managers and Consultants page on the Hedgehog Street website. We are also building links with developers to ensure hedgehogs are not forgotten in the rush to build houses Visit the Working with Developers page on the Hedgehog Street website
Outreach and engagement - This is all the work associated with Hedgehog Street and the Hedgehog Champions, including any media and PR work
