Coping with loss

Losing someone or something we love can be extremely difficult, whether that’s through a divorce, friendship, death of a person or pet. Everyone experiences things differently, but there are things you can do to support your child through the challenging times of loss.

When your child is experiencing loss:

  1. Try to be simple and clear so that your child understands what’s happened.
  2. Listen to how the child feels through both their words and behaviour.
  3. Remember that everyone copes with loss differently and your child’s response might not be what you expect.
