Birkenhead Central Library is an important part of the town’s cultural and architectural heritage. The current building is the third purpose-built public library to have served Birkenhead and was formally opened on 18 July 1934 by King George V. Since then, it has continued to play a central role in local life, providing access to books, archives, information and community activities for generations of residents.
As part of Wirral Heritage Open Day, visitors will have the opportunity to take part in a guided tour of this historic building. The tour will begin in the entrance foyer and continue through key areas of the library, finishing in the reference library. Along the way, attendees will be able to learn more about the building’s history, its features and its place within Birkenhead’s wider heritage.
This event is a chance to look more closely at a well-known local landmark and discover stories that may not be obvious during an everyday visit. Whether you are interested in local history, architecture, libraries or simply want to find out more about Birkenhead’s past, the tour offers an accessible and engaging way to explore one of the town’s treasured public buildings.
