Being a new mum

  • The first few weeks and months after having a baby can be emotional. You may feel a huge mix of emotions from joy, love and pride to worry, sadness and frustration.
  • It is very important to look after yourself which will enable you to better meet your baby’s needs. You are not alone if you are feeling low. Up to 1 in 5 women and 1 in 10 men develop mental health problems such as depression or anxiety during pregnancy, or in the first year after childbirth.
  • If you are worried about the way you are feeling, please talk to your midwife, health visitor or doctor. The midwives will check your general wellbeing – asking you if you have anything that you are worried about and advising you on what is normal in the early days after your baby is born.
  • A midwife will visit you and your baby usually the day after you have been discharged from hospital. You will remain under the care of the midwife for a maximum of 28 days; you may be discharged sooner if there are no concerns.
