How can I help my child with my separation and divorce?

Every child and young person will experience the loss of their known family unit differently. There are things you can do to improve the way your child copes with all the changes happening around them.

  1. Keep relationships going- try and make sure your child has good and easy contact with both parents and keep up usual relationships with grandparents and other close family friends.
  2. Avoid conflict in front of your children- arguing when your children are present can make them anxious and frightened.
  3. Listen to child’s concerns- allow them to express their emotions and worries about this big change.
  4. Make sure your child’s not in the middle- don’t ask your child to take sides or be a go-between for you and your ex-partner.
  5. If they act out- create opportunities to discuss their feelings and define what is acceptable behaviour and what is not.
  6. Maintain some normality- stick to familiar routines and activities to minimise change.
