All pregnant women in Wirral have a named Community Midwife to provide individualised professional and supportive antenatal and postnatal care, regardless of the intended place of birth. Seeing the same midwife regularly, as planned, provides continuity of care and the formation of trust between mother and midwife.
Community Midwives are rotationally on-call 24 hours a day, 365 days of the year for women giving birth at home.
Community Midwifery teams liaise and work closely with the hospital-based midwives, Obstetricians, local GPs, Health Visitors, Social Workers, Physiotherapists and other allied professionals to try to ensure needs are met and families are fully supported.
Antenatal Care
The pattern of antenatal care depends on individual circumstances. For low risk pregnancies, all care will be given in the community. For higher risk pregnancies, care will be shared between hospital and community, as needed.
- 6-12 weeks - Early access to Community Midwife at GP surgery or designated centres/hubs.
- 10-12 weeks – Your first midwife appointment (also called the booking appointment) should happen around 10-12 weeks pregnant. The appointment usually takes around an hour.
Antenatal Education
Antenatal education is an important and valued element of our maternity services at Wirral University Teaching Hospital. Preparation for birth can positively impact birth outcomes and experiences, enhancing the transition to parenthood and aim is to give you all the necessary information and practical skills to help prepare you and your birth partner for labour and birth via an alternative method to the option of face-to-face classes.
Here at the WUTH we know that becoming a parent is one of the most rewarding and challenging times of your life. A team of specialist midwives in collaboration with Maternity Voices has been prepared an on-line parent education package for women and their families to access in the leisure of their own homes.
