Keeping our children safe around water involves more than just teaching them how to swim.  By explaining to our children the risks and proper behaviours around water, we can help prevent accidents and ensure that time spent near water is both enjoyable and safe.

Babies and children

Babies and young children can drown in as little as 2 inches of water. Baths, garden ponds, hot tubs, paddling pools all pose a risk.

The Royal Life Saving Society have a wealth of information to help keep our children safe around water. To access resources such as safety at home, on holiday and in pools and topics including how to teach your child basic water safety skills, visit RLSS parent resources

Teenagers and Young people

Teenagers can be drawn to lakes, reservoirs, canals, rivers and beaches especially during the warm summer months.

A high percentage of accidental drownings in the UK are teenagers.

In 2021 there were 277 accidental drownings, 62% of these happened at inland waters such as canals/reservoirs and 83% of these were male.
Canal & River Trust

46% of drownings occur in the summer months and this rises to 75% amongst 13 – 17-year olds.

Messing around by water may seem fun but no one can know how deep or shallow the water is, what the current is like, what risks lie beneath the water or how the cold will affect your body.

For more information to help educate teenagers and young people about the dangers of inland water, please visit Water safety for teenagers and young people
