Volunteering

Volunteering is a great way to meet new people, boost confidence and make a big difference to others and our community.

There are lots of opportunities to volunteer in Wirral that can fit into your life. If you’d like to volunteer but something is stopping you – like a disability, lack of transportation, or time constraints – don’t rule yourself out. There are lots of roles you could do via phone or computer instead; it’s always worth exploring. Here’s why:

Meet new people

Volunteering with a local community organisation can help you meet new people and make new friends. If you’ve recently come to the area or you’d just like to get to know more people, finding an opportunity to volunteer can help you feel more connected to where you live and the people in your part of Wirral. It can also help you find out more of what’s on for your children and family.

Boost your wellbeing

Helping others gives your brain a rush of happy chemicals just like getting a pay rise at work! Volunteering helps both your mental and physical health. It can reduce the effects of anxiety, stress and anger by giving you regular contact with other people doing a shared project. Doing good for others can increase your confidence and pride, and give you a sense of purpose.

Learn something new

Giving something new a go can help you develop new skills, or give you more experience in something you’re interested in. You don’t need to know everything before you start; lots of volunteers go on training to help them in their roles. These skills and experiences could give you what you need to help you find a new job or just do something that you enjoy!

How to find something that’s right for you

There are lots of ways to volunteer and plenty of places that would benefit from your time and skills. When working out who to approach, it’s helpful to know about why you want to volunteer, and to have an idea about the kind of thing you would enjoy. Think about:

  • What are you passionate about or interested in?
  • What are the skills or experience that you have to bring?
  • How much time to do you have to give?
  • Would you prefer to be with adults, children, animals, or volunteering from home?
