Makaton uses signs and symbols to help people communicate. It is designed to support the development of spoken language. Makaton signs are based on the gestures used in BSL (British Sign Language – the language of the Deaf community). However, unlike BSL, Makaton signs are used in conjunction with speech at all times and in English grammatical word order.
Singing Hands' aim is to enable everyone, regardless of age or ability, to learn how to sign using Makaton. Our unique and enthusiastic approach is designed to help develop someone’s communication potential through music, songs, rhymes, stories, games and activities. We focus on learning language in a way that it is motivating, engaging and most of all, fun.
Singing Hands has grown organically over the years to include:
- Makaton at home (via Zoom) - Learn Makaton direct from our home to yours
- Singing Hands Educational Concerts - Inspire Staff and Pupils with in-person visits to your school
- Singing Hands Live - Take part in an inclusive, multi-sensory, Makaton concert with your family and friends
- Digital Makaton Musical resources - 100s of ad-free Makaton signed songs at your fingertips

Makaton with Singing Workshops
Using Makaton with Singing is a fun and easy way to learn to use signs with singing for young children. Signing and singing have been shown to encourage the development of communication and language skills and are beneficial for vocalisation, confidence, social skills, emotional development, well-being and self-esteem.
Designed for those who have no prior knowledge of Makaton, Using Makaton with Singing is provided as a half-day workshop for Early Years practitioners, parents, teachers, support workers and other professionals working with young children. You will learn up to 100 signs and have fun practising them in songs adapted for different levels of ability.
The 3-hour workshop is divided into four lively practical sessions covering:
- What is Makaton
- Tips for Signing
- Developing skills through signing and singing
- Using Makaton in my setting
