Safe Spaces Reclaiming Community Spaces - Comics Youth CIC

Comics Youth was founded in 2015 and is a creative community organisation led by young people, for young people. We aim to empower youth across the Liverpool City Region to flourish from the margins of society: Harnessing their narratives, finding confidence within an inclusive community, and developing the resilience to succeed on their path.

We offer a range of creative services designed to support and amplify the often diminished voices of marginalised young people aged 8 to 25. From zine creation and comic book reading workshops to youth-led publishing hubs and AQA Unit Award Scheme programmes, we believe young people deserve to have their voices discovered, distributed, and elevated.

Are you a marginalised young person aged 14 to 25 years who want to create safe spaces in Liverpool?

The Safe Spaces Reclaiming Community Spaces is the project for you.

We are looking for 12 young creatives aged 14 to 25 to work with a £2.5k budget allocated for commission work, events and installations to promote safety and inclusion in the spaces we want to use for community-led events.

Do you want to host the best poetry night? An inclusive gig with a diverse line-up? A coffee meet-up to network with marginalised creatives? An exhibition? Or create a handbook to teach our venues how they can best serve your community? We want to have you on board with whatever you have in mind to promote community and inclusion within the arts.

There is a real lack of safe spaces in Liverpool, especially with the rise of homophobic and transphobic hate crimes over the past year. Our ‘Safe Spaces Reclaiming Community Spaces Project’ is a chance to create spaces where LGBTQIA* and marginalised people can feel safe, seen and find creative community thanks to you.

During this project, you will also partake in workshops where you will be up-skilled in hosting events, budgeting, commission work and more. Our weekly planning sessions will also be a space to socialise with like-minded creatives.

All sessions are completely inclusive and are open to young people of all skillsets and levels – no prior experience necessary.
