Money and your mental health

ARTICLE See also:

Money is something everyone worries about at some point in their life. Do I have enough to pay my bills? Or buy that present for my son or daughter?

Your money can affect your mental health:

  1. It can feel stressful thinking about the money you need to spend.
  2. You can spend money when you feel bad to help yourself feel better.
  3. Sometimes you can avoid looking at bank statements as if you don’t know what you are spending you don’t have to worry.

These things don’t necessarily mean you have problems with your money. But if you spend frequently and avoid looking at your spending, it can lead to you losing control of your money.

Simple steps you can take to tackle this:

  1. Get rid of credit cards or store cards so you can’t be persuaded to spend money you don’t have in your account.
  2. Talk to your bank about adding a note on credit file about taking out loans. (This won’t affect your credit score.)
  3. Read over your bank statements. They shouldn’t be as bad as you think.
  4. Find something else that makes you happy instead of spending money e.g. making yourself a nice meal.

Trying these steps can also help you feel in control of your money. You can do it. And if you feel like you can’t, talk to someone about the support you need.
