Virtual Buddying – Sense

Virtual Buddying - Sense

We are Sense, the national disability charity – supporting everyone who is deafblind or has complex disabilities. We believe everyone should be able to take part in life, no matter their disability.

We know how challenging it can be if you are living with two or more disabilities, such as sight and hearing loss, and need high levels of support with aspects of your daily life.  That’s why we’ll do everything we can to help you.

What is Virtual Buddying?

Sense matches volunteers with disabled people to meet for an hour a week on Zoom or over the phone. Our volunteers have spent thousands of hours with their buddies — learning new skills, having fun, and forming fantastic friendships.

Sense matches each volunteer with someone who has similar interests, to make sure you have a great time. If you’re volunteering with an under-18, we’ll also request a DBS check (don’t worry, we will help you get this and we will pay for it, too). And that’s it, time for your first session with your buddy!

Who is this aimed at?

For everyone living with complex disabilities. For everyone who is deafblind. Sense is here to help people communicate and experience the world. We believe that no one, no matter how complex their disabilities, should be isolated, left out, or unable to fulfil their potential.

How to get involved

In response to Covid-19 Sense has reconfigured our services. We've been continuing to offer services across our departments to children, young people, siblings, adults and their families. We've been providing virtual opportunities to engage in 1-to-1 sessions, groups and buddying as well as providing postal activities for those already known to us. We're now in a position to extend and scale up our offer nationally and reach new users externally.
