Action Needed Immediately – Ask for ANI and Safe Spaces

Action Needed Immediately - Ask for ANI and Safe Spaces

Home is not always a safe place. The COVID-19 pandemic has brought into focus the impact of lockdown on domestic abuse victims and reinforced the importance of domestic abuse being ‘everyone’s business. This does not just apply to a lockdown situation and is equally true as restrictions change.

Therefore, the domestic abuse ‘code word scheme’ Ask for ANI (Action Needed Immediately) is being established in pharmacies to enable victims of domestic abuse to access support within their local community.

They may require assistance to either call the police on 999 or contact specialist services displayed in the safe space.

Birkenhead Jobcentre are part of a national trial and will be supporting the Ask for ANI codeword scheme from Monday 20th February 2023.

The scheme was initially launched in pharmacies as part of the nationally coordinated response to COVID-19 to provide a discreet way for victims to signal they require emergency assistance at a time when other avenues were closed off to them. The scheme was developed with the help of partners including the domestic abuse sector, pharmacy associations and the police and was launched across the UK in January 2021. An independent evaluation was undertaken to assess how the scheme is working and to better understand how it can be improved. The findings were very encouraging and found evidence that the scheme provided victims of domestic abuse with a means of accessing immediate help in the community.

The aspiration is to expand the scheme into other venues in order to reach more victims, enabling them to secure the support they require. In the cross-government Tackling Domestic Abuse Plan, we committed to trial the expansion of the scheme into jobcentres.  In Merseyside these Jobcentres are Birkenhead and St Helens.
